This post has been a long while coming, because I just didn’t buy many things the past few months. I didn’t want to do a review with only like 2 things, so I’ve been stock piling so I could make a better post!
99.9% of the time, when I go cosmetics shopping, I never have a particular thing I *need* to buy. I just fall for the cute packaging or smell of something and decide to try it. And I’m usually really impressed and surprised with the things I find. So without further ado!
First we have lip glosses. From left to right:
1. I’m Shea Butter Lip Cream from The Face Shop: I never go to The Face Shop. And it’s completely superficial. I’ve never been impressed with the packaging and nothing really stands out to me, until I saw this lip cream. It smells delicious and it’s really slick and smooth. It also has a bit of shine so it can easily double as a gloss.
2. Innisfree Eco Windy Lip Balm, Green Tea: I am so on the fence about this stuff. On one hand, it’s really moisturizing and the scent is nice, but it’s also super thick. Uncomfortably thick. I’m thinking that this stuff was obviously made for windy/cold weather (as the name implies), so under those circumstances, I can see it being perfect. As of right now, it’s a bit thick for my liking, but I’m going to hold on to it until winter time.
3. Lost Identity Lip Balm (?) from Too Cool for School: This will be my first time reviewing something from Too Cool for School, but let it be known that I’m pretty obsessed with the brand. I’m not entirely sure of the name, but let’s just call it the Lost Identity Lip Balm. It is AMAZING. So, it’s one of those lip balms that’s green, but once you put it on your lips it oxidizes to match your skin color. I AM IN LOVE. It’s the prettiest shade of pink on my skin, just enough color to make me look put together and light enough for school. Anyone can buy it, and the shade will definitely match you. Plus, look at the packaging!! Adorable. I’m not sure if this is a seasonal/limited edition buy, but I’m already thinking I need to stock up.
4. Innisfree Lipstick in 38: With fall here, I’ve been dreaming of dark berry lips, slouchy beanies and boots. So once I saw this gorgeous berry purple lipstick, I knew I had to buy it no matter what. It’s really unusual to see such a dark colored lipstick in a Korean cosmetics store, so I took advantage. I love it. It’s such a gorgeous, rich color and the texture is really nice too. It’s moisturizing, but not really long lasting. It’s definitely something you’d have to keep applying through the night, so be warned!
5. Innisfree Lip Gloss in 13: This is just the matching berry lip gloss. I like Innisfree lip gloss as it’s not sticky or tacky, and it is moisturizing. Plus, it’s 90% natural! What’s not to love.
6. SkinFood Vita Tok Lip Gloss in PK03: I reviewed this lip gloss before, but I fell in love with a different color. Out of all the lip glosses I’ve tried in Korea, the Vita Tok line is my absolute favorite. The PK 03 color is a bright, hot pink. It’s a great going out with the girls color, or even an everyday lip gloss color. It smells and tastes great, it’s not sticky at all, and it’s super moisturizing. I want to hoard this stuff. Seriously.
The Innisfree No Sebum Mineral Powder is a MUST HAVE. My dear friend Rae told me about this finishing powder and said I needed to buy it immediately. She said it was basically the same thing as the Makeup Forever HD Powder, which is a cool 45,000W(ish) here. The No Sebum Mineral Powder is a sweet 6,000W and does the SAME THING. I use this on top of my tinted moisturizer or even without makeup to give myself a clean, polished, look. Buy it. You won’t regret it.
Too Cool for School Eyeliners in Aqua (?) and Black: Guys. GUYS. Buy this eyeliner. I am consistently amazed at the quality of the products from Too Cool for School, and this is no exception. I’ve had the hardest time trying to find a jet black eye pencil. Most of them are an off black, grey, or just not black enough for my liking. And if they are, they’re watery and weird and smudge easily. These eyeliners are the real deal. The black is a super inky black, it does not smudge, and it’s waterproof. The aqua/blue color is simply to die for. I’ve actually started wearing it daily, because it’s just that gorgeous. I went shopping with one of my friends and told her to try it, and she instantly fell in love. It’s about 8,500W and worth every bit.
The Face Shop Herb Day Cleansing Tissue: Like I said earlier, I never really go to The Face Shop, but my friend recommended these face wipes to me, and they were on sale, so…why not? I actually really like them! They aren’t anything super special, but they smell really good, they’re great at removing makeup and they don’t leave my skin feeling like a desert. I usually use them before/after the gym, and it’s the perfect refresher.
1. Innisfree Canola Honey Body Butter: I am beyond obsessed with this body butter. I have terrible, terrible dry skin, so I need my moisture levels to be 200% at all times. This body butter is simply perfect. It’s thick, it’s super moisturizing, and it smells like heaven. It’s 15,000W, and a little goes a long way. I’ve had it for almost 2 months now and it’s just now half empty.
2. Innisfree Jeju Volcanic Pore Scrub Foam: I ran out of my SkinFood Black Sugar scrub foam, so I wanted to try something different. I opted to get the Innisfree scrub foam. It’s…okay. I definitely like the SkinFood scrub better. The Innisfree scrub foam seems a little drying, and the smell is a tad bit overwhelming for me. I think I just fell in love with the SkinFood scrub and nothing will compare. I use this scrub maybe once a week as a skin pick me up, but I don’t think I’ll be purchasing it again.
3. SkinFood Coconut Body Scrub: I loooooooooooooooooooooove this body scrub. I had been eying it for ages, and I finally just bit the bullet and bought it. I’m so glad I did. My shower experience is forever amazing now. It smells really good, but not super strong. The scrub granules are just gritty enough, and you can even see the flecks of coconut in it. It lathers really well, and leaves your skin super soft afterwards. A little goes a long way!
4. SkinFood Cool Mint Tea Shower Cologne: I’m assuming ‘shower cologne’ means body splash/spray. But anyways, I love this scent. It smells like a mix of green tea and sweet mint. It’s really clean, crisp, and refreshing, and it’s definitely perfect as an after shower spray, or as a pick me up throughout the day. Johnny always compliments me when I wear it. As you can see from the picture, the bottle is almost finished, so you know I like it!
And there it is! The latest in my Korean beauty chronicles. I know it may seem like I like everything…and actually, I do like pretty much everything I buy. I usually buy the full product if I like the free samples that are given away, and there’s always samples of every single product available at all stores, so I usually know what I’m getting myself into before I make the commitment. There’s been a few things that I haven’t liked at all (the SkinFood Hair Argan Oil Serum comes to mind), but mostly, everything I’ve bought here has been really awesome!
Have you tried any of the products I’ve recommended? Any recommendations of things I should try? I’m always looking out for new products!

SHERYLL. YES. evangelize the no sebum mineral powder. IT WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE. i don’t even know how i was a human being before this.
…i’m going to innisfree on my lunch break.
YESSSSS! And the glow base is FANTASTIC! It makes my skin look so dewy and fresh. You’re absolutely the best. ever.
I’m considering buying that shea lip balm/cream stuff…my lips go crazy dry as soon as winter hits. I don’t think I could cope with the taste of green tea on my mouth all day. My favourite thing right now is this foaming cleanser from Tony Moly – it’s fantastic! And an almond face scrub from (I think) Nature Republic.
Still yet to venture into the world of guyliner and foundation (is there a man term for that? Mandation? Isn’t that a real word anyway?)
LOL! Mandation! I’ve seen the guys BB cream all over the place. But I never see the guys actually buying it. When I went into Nature Republic the other day, a girl had a basket full of stuff for guys…I’m assuming for her boyfriend. LOL!
I love, love, love those Face Shop cleansing tissues, or as I lovingly refer to them as, face wipes. Much better than any brand I used in the US, and sooo much cheaper.
I need to look for that winter lip balm. My lips are already starting their annoying, Korean winter dryout…
I just tried another lip balm from Nature Republic (which is having a sale right now), and it’s really good. It’s called Mango Bebe Lip Care Stick. It’s not as thick as the stuff from Innisfree, but I know when winter comes, I’ll be loving the Innisfree lip balm like crazy!
The Face Shop is actually really great – I have some awesome mascara from there, and this sweet sparkly purple eyeliner that looks really cool, and it wasn’t too expensive.
I’ll have to pick up some of that no-sebum powder next time I pass by Innisfree – that’s a really good deal.
The no sebum powder is incredible! You will love it. Everytime I go to Innisfree they’re either almost sold out of it, or sold out of it completely, so it’s a really popular item!
Every time I visit your blog, I get angry at myself for being away so long. Love it! Asian cosmetics are the best. Stocked up in Japan and need to do the same on my next trip.
I was JUST thinking about you the other day! I was wishing that I could go back to Synie’s for cupcakes and tea. Sigh! A trip to Europe is definitely needed. And when I finally make it to Japan, I’m definitely sending you an email!
God, Sheryll. You make me want to go to Korea just for the cosmetics. Seriously.
Hi Sheryll! I stumbled upon your blog while looking for recommendations for Korean cosmetics. I’m Japanese/Australian living in Tokyo and visiting Seoul at the moment(totally Lost In Translation lol) and am a total makeup hoarder!! Although Japan is probably the vainest and thus the best city to buy anything to make a girl pretty Korean cosmetics are sooooo much cheaper!! I’m thinking of studying in Korea next year so your blog seems really helpful and I’ve already noted the above products to try on my next shopping trip
) thank you and looking forward to reading your posts!! Ps: have you used any Korean hair dyes or tried any hair salons?? Also have you tried holika holika’s magic pole mascara? It’s like the givenchy (I think) round brush mascara and its GREAT to use as a finishing touch to your everyday macara as the round small brush catches EVERY lash:))
Hey Asuka! I haven’t used any hair dye…YET. I really want to dye my hair super jet black, but I haven’t made the plunge yet. When I do, I’ll be sure to post about it!
I actually just got a hair cut at Juno hair. It’s a relatively large chain hair salon in Korea, and they normally have at least 1 person that can speak decent English. As you know, my hair is out of control curly, so it took me a lot to even trust anyone, but I did it and it turned out great! My hair was a disaster before, so anything would’ve been better, LOL! I’ve also heard so many expats rave about Hair and Joy in Hongdae.
I haven’t tried that mascara from Holika, Holika! I’ve actually never been there (shocking, I know!) There isn’t one close to me, and the only one I’ve seen is in Myeongdong. I’m going to have to make a trip there because I’ve heard how awesome the Givenchy mascara is, so I need to check it out! Thanks for the recommendation!
Juno’s where I went too! Waiting to get my hair done again until I’m back in Korea… I loved the job Juno did (my stylist really went out of her way to make sure she understood what I wanted)!
Love these make up pages! I see you’re a big fan of: Etude, Innis, and Skin Food.
My recommendations (I’m also an American in Korea):
- Lip gloss at Missha (pretty pink tones that go with every skin color)
- Eye shadows at Face Shop (silky soft and never chalky colors)
-Try these Innis Free products out (if you haven’t already): SPF35 sunblock with built-in primer, Mineral Moisture Fitting Base
- I like Skin Food’s egg primer more than Banila Co’s cheaply packaged but pricier primer. But, as you mentioned, Etude House’s is really awesome, too!
All of my lotions are from Innis Free but I use Seolhwasoo foundation.
You are my hero. Thank you so much for your comment! I’m gonna check out the lip gloss from Missha and the Eyeshadows from Face Shop. I also LOVE the Innisfree Mineral Glow Base. My face looks so dewy and fresh, I can’t get enough!
Is it good for a combination to oily skin? It seems to be a moisturizing base, so not sure if to buy it. Thanks in advance.
oh! and i recently found the most AWESOME use of my Innis Free make up remover oil cleanser. it doubles as the BEST make up brush cleanser. The colors just bleed right off and the brushes are left soft and squeaky clean! ^_^
you = awesome.
sheryll!!!! ^_^
ONLY go to Missha on the 11th of each month! that is their “anniversary” day and you get 20% off EVERYTHING in the store. i always hold out till the 11th for Missha, LOL!
*gasp!* The 11th is tomorrow! woooo!
(and PS, who are you and can we be friends?!)
Hi Sheryll!
It’s me, “Sample!” LOL…oh yes, you are right! Today was the 11th! Did you end up going? Looking forward to your updates ^_^ Also, I was wondering if you had a YouTube channel? Your blog is so awesome, I think a lot of people would love to see you share about your travels as well as your expertise in Korean make up
Jane
Re: subway challenge…omg! you know sarah (she did line 4…mappingwords.com)? she’s my homegirl! ^_^ what a small world
btw sheryll, , this is my little blog that i dabble at but not too seriously, as you will see. in fact, the domain expires next month, and i don’t want to, but i think i will renew…. http://www.seoulseek.com/
Renew!!!!!
Haha I’m obsessed with Korean cosmetics too.
I’m sooo interested in the green lip balm from Too Cool for School! Just wondering, does it have any SPF in it?
I’m pretty sure it doesn’t, but I’m going to check. I think it’s actually more of a lip tint/balm, because my lips definitely stay a little pink even after my gloss is gone.
Is there an online store where I can buy the Too Cool for School cosmetics besides ebay? I’m from Ohio but still would like to use Korean cosmetics and where I live you really can’t just go out and buy it.
Hey Colleen! I am not familiar with any online stores that sell authentic stuff, but I have heard of a lot of people using ebay to find Korean cosmetics.
OK thanks. I usually get my stuff from ebay or amazon but they hardly have anything of Too Cool for School and Innisfree. So was just wondering. Your blog was really helpful for me, so thank you!
Hi Sheryll. I stumbled across your blog today and my word, I LOVE IT! For the past year I have been sticking to the brands I always used back in SA (Clinique & MAC) but you have inspired me to buy some Korean stuff. Problem is, I am of Indian origin and I can’t find a base that’s dark enough. Do you have any recommendations Oh Wise One?? I am not looking for a foundation (too heavy), maybe a BB cream or tinted moisturizer.
Hi Aneesa! Sadly, there won’t be any Korean base that’s dark enough. I use Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer in Tan, and Smashbox Tinted Moisturizer in Medium. If you’re in Korea and can get to a MAC counter, I’ve actually seen my color (NC 45), but it’s the absolute darkest one they have.
I can’t rave enough about how awesome the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer is. It lasts FOREVER, provides awesome coverage and was 20SPF. I’m obsessed and I’d recommend it in a heartbeat!
I did go to MAC in my nearest Shinsegae but I felt like the foundation was far too heavy & not quite my shade. Pretty sure there is a Laura Mercier counter there so will go check it out. Thanks so much for the advice and awesome blog. Just 1 more thing: If you are looking for something to get rid off blackheads, I totally recommend The Face Shop Volcanic Clay mask…. Its fabulous!
Thank you so much for the recommendation! I’m going to try it next pay day
Wish I read this post before I left for my visit in Korea. I’ve not one Innisfree product. But the mineral powder looks kinda cool. Faceshop was always my religion and second was Nature Republic. Oddly, I love their minimal packaging… inspires “clean” me. But SkinFood’s Argan Oil Serum- totally agree– hated it. Got a perm and it was recommended to me to relax the frizz. It didn’t smell like anything lovely & my frizz still held.
Ugh, the Skinfood Argan Oil Serum is such a waste. And Innisfree is my religion! The mineral powder saved my life this summer. I don’t use it as much now, since my skin isn’t a sweaty, gross mess, but it’s definitely a great product!
Hello Sherryl, I can’t even describe how happy I was when I came accross your blog, My obsession with korean dramas had lead me into their cosmetics as I was impressed by how they look very natural. But unfortunately, my korean is as good as the one of a toddler, therefore I couldn’t get a lot of informations about the products to know what would work better for me. Now that I found you, I can easily say that I got my answer. I was thinking of getting banilla co prime primer in natural for me and in matte for my mother since she has oily skin and I read somewhere that it was the n0 best seller in Korean, but Someone mentionned that Skin Food egg primer is better than Banilla Co one. I wonder if you could provide some advices and also I heard Etude house makes an eyeshadow primer as good as urban decay primer. have you tried it? Thank you
I’ve heard so many wonderful things about the Banila primer, but I’ve never tried it. I also haven’t seen an eyelid primer at Etude either, although I LOVE their pore primer.
Currently, I’m using The Face Shop’s Velvet Skin primer and I love it. My makeup goes on so smooth!
