What I’ve Been Up To Lately

One of my friends sent me a screen shot of the last time I posted a blog. The date was in January.

I feel absolutely awful. Life has just been life-ing away over here in Vietnam. The beginning of the year started with a huge bang, and hasn’t really let up since. Here’s a little run-down of what I’ve been up to:

  1. I’ve started writing about skincare over at xoNecole.com. You can find my posts over in the Skin and Nails section!
  2. One of my best friends from college came to visit me for a month and I had such a great time. It’s so nice seeing the city you live in through fresh eyes. We went to Phuket together, the Mekong Delta, a Saigon Heat game, and ate lots of amazing food.
  3. I’ve also done some traveling in the new year -to Phuket with my best friend and Johnny, (and where I also met my HS bestie), Hoi An, Vietnam for Johnny and I’s 10 year anniversary, and I’m going to Bangkok on Sunday.
  4. I’m also working like crazy. Workworkworkworkworkwork (Like Rihanna).

And for the big news. I’m sad to be saying this, but I’ll be leaving Ho Chi Minh City in May. As much as I wanted to start the IFA program in Paris, the dates just didn’t add up for me. So, instead, Johnny and I are moving to Phuket, Thailand for the next 3 to 6 months.

Bangkok – The Grand Palace

Remember that time I went to Bangkok?

Yeah. It seems like it was centuries ago! I’ve been focusing so much on the beauty side of things that I totally forgot to share some more photos from our trip.

The Grand Palace in Bangkok is probably the #1 tourist site in the city. It was a million and a half degrees when we went, and they have a strict dress code which requires you to be pretty covered, so needless to say, I was a giant ball of sweat afterwards, but it was SO worth it. My photos don’t do the palace justice. It was so gold, so ornate, so beautiful.

Have you visited the Grand Palace? What did you think? Let me know in the comments!

(PS I’m still tinkering with the blog layout so please excuse the mess!)

Standby

Hello, hello, hello!

I’m sure some of you have noticed that the blog is going through some issues right now. I updated to WordPress 4.0 last week, and usually I don’t have any issues whatsoever with the updates. This last time was a different story.

After I updated, I started getting a 500 Internal Server Error whenever I tried to click on a blog post, and then once that was resolved, I noticed the comments weren’t working. My friend’s boyfriend confirmed what I thought – that my theme is out of date with WordPress 4.0 and I need to get a new theme.

I’ve had the same theme since I started this blog almost 4 years ago, so I guess it’s finally time to upgrade. I’m notoriously picky, and finding a new one hasn’t been a walk in the park. But I’ve narrowed it down to about 5! How the blog looks is an extension of myself, and I want to make sure it represents me in the best way possible.

In other WAY more exciting news, I just found out su:m37 now makes a cleansing balm and an overnight mask. I’ve obviously already ordered them, and CANNOT wait to try them. I’m dying just thinking about it. We already know that pretty much everything from su:m37 is magical, so I’m beyond excited.

I’m looking to have the blog back up this week. Is there anything in particular you’d like to see? Drop me a line over on Facebook (since you can’t leave messages sniff sniff) if you want to see a review on a particular product reviews, life in Vietnam, Glamtrotting, etc. Just let me know!

My Packing Tips!

tumblr_n7fg0vwDIf1st5lhmo1_1280As a frequent traveler, packing is something that I have to deal with quite often. There are tons of videos out there detailing awesome packing tips, but packing has never been one of my strongest traveling skills. I prefer to say I’m great at navigating, shopping, and avoiding street hawkers. I usually wait until the last minute, then have a royal freak out 5 hours before the plane takes off. I always make it to the airport though!

But sometimes, while packing, I realize I do have a method to my madness. One of my favorite packing items are packing cubes. I bought them when I went backpacking through Europe and I have been obsessed with them ever since. I have 4 – I put shirts in one, pants/dresses in another, underwear in another, and beauty items in the last one. It keeps everything super organized and you don’t have to worry about making a huge mess digging through your suitcase every day.

Even though I’m somewhat of an organized packer, I am 100% definitely an over packer. I like to be prepared. You never know if it’ll rain or if you’ll be stranded at the airport or if there’s a typhoon…(yes, I may also be a bit of a worrier). I gotta have options! If I’m going away for a weekend, I’ll bring 2 pairs of shoes (one dressy, one casual), and possibly a third for the gym. Always research where you’re going and what kinds of activities you’re going to do. For example, when I went to Bangkok, I knew that I wanted to go to the Grand Palace and some temples, so I had to make sure I brought clothes that were appropriate. For a typical weekend trip, I’ll pack anywhere between 4 to 5 outfits. Thankfully, my wardrobe is pretty neutral, so most of my pieces can easily be mixed and matched. I’m a big fan of maxi dresses, as you can style them with jean jackets for cooler weather, you can throw a scarf over them if you’re going to a religious site, and they can easily be dressed up for nights with some jewelry and fierce makeup.

Now beauty packing for me is a whole different story. As you all know, I am very serious about my skincare. I have different products I use for my AM and PM routine, and that can get a bit crazy when trying to pack for a short trip. I always try to save my samples for this very reason. Again, I research what the weather for what country I’m traveling to and tailor my skincare around that. When I went to Mui Ne, I  knew I’d be at the beach 95% of the time so I didn’t bring much makeup and focused on suncare and overnight masks at night to soothe my skin from being in the sun all day. When I went to Bangkok, I knew it would be a million degrees so I definitely had to pack a face mist, my Clarisonic, and a lightweight daytime moisturizer. If I don’t have a sample size of a product, I’ll decant it into a mini plastic bottle.

And now for a topic that no one wants to talk about but inevitably happens – your period. During my last two trips, my period decided to unexpectedly grace me with its presence. I’m quite sure the worst possible thing to happen during a 7 hour bus ride in the middle of Vietnam is for your period to start. Now, I always make sure to pack Carefree panty liners, since you just never know how long you’ll be without a bathroom … and no one wants any accidents! Trust me, I’ve learned from experience.

Mui Ne

beach
This past weekend, Johnny and I took a little trip to Mui Ne. It’s the closest beach town to Ho Chi Minh City, and trust, we definitely needed the break. After work on Friday, we hopped on a bus, and in about 6 hours (was supposed to be 5 but traffic was crazy), we were in beach heaven. Mui Ne is also an extremely popular tourist spot for Russians, so in a few of my pictures you’ll see a lot of Russian written on the signs and stuff.

Per Lauren’s recommendation, we stayed at the Ananda Resort, which was AMAZING. We rented one of the beach bungalows, and from our door to the ocean was about a 30 second walk. Best of all, it was only $50 bucks a night! A light breakfast was also included, and the staff and service was phenomenal. If you go to Mui Ne, you definitely need to check them out.

We were only there 2 days, so we didn’t have much time to explore. We basically just ate and lounged around on the beach. Perfection. We both came back with tans and a little more pep in our step. Well….we did have one minor mishap. Our bus on the way back broke down, so for about 2 hours we were stuck in some roadside restaurant in the middle of nowhere. It wasn’t pleasant, but I’m thankful Johnny was with me to keep me sane.

And while I was there, I had the chance to pull out my trusty ol’ camera. I’ve really been neglecting taking photos here in Vietnam, and that’s gotta change. But for now, I have about 20 photos from our little weekend getaway. Hope you enjoy!
